12:15 am - Presidential debates I was going to drink to "my friends" by McCain, but I'm glad I decided to just write it down instead. I recorded 16 iterations of it, and I think I missed a few after an hour as I started spacing out whenever McCain spoke. What a boring debate format!

06:41 pm - Happy Loving Day! From Kos: Today is Loving Day, the anniversary of the day in 1967 when interracial marriage became legal across the United States.
The seemingly appropriate name actually comes from a court case, one started by Mildred and Richard Loving, who were forbidden from marrying in their home state of Virginia. At the time, Virginia was one of sixteen states that had laws making it illegal for couples to marry across racial lines. The Lovings were married in Washington in 1958, but as soon as they returned to Virginia, the couple was arrested. The Lovings spent time in jail for violating Virginia's state law against people of different races "cohabitating as a man and wife."
It wasn't until nine years later that the Supreme Court set aside their conviction and ruled that the Virginia anti-miscegenation laws, and all other such state laws, were unconstitutional. Loving Day is not remembered as a victory for Civil Rights, and there are commemorations of the day in several states.

02:35 pm - My life expectancy I heard on NPR health and science that one researcher has discovered that just about all mammals follow the rule that average life expectancy is 1.5 billion heart beats, from mice to elephants, and everything in between. Humans are the exception because of all of our medical advancements, clean environment, etc. But I wanted to explore the idea a little further to determine how long *I* should live. I always thought it would be a miracle if I lived to be 35 when I was a kid because I was so ill, although lately I have hopes to possibly live to be 50, albeit not in very good health for 10 years before.
I did the math during lunch.
Average human heart rate is 72 beats per minute. Most animals average life expectancy is 1.5 billion heart beats. That equals just over 40.5 years. Present day native life expectancy is 34 years, see wiki post Life Expectancy.
Kids have a higher heart rate, which would subtract some years from live expectancy using the 72 bpm value, probably bringing the calculated life expectancy to 35 yrs also: Humans 1-3 years is 130, average for 4-8 years old I 100, and 9-11 is 88. Average heart beat rate for persons of 12-16 is 80, and above 16 is 72 heartbeats per minute. (ref:http://www.steadyhealth.com/averege_human_heart_rate_t58106.html, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_rate)
Using these child heartrate values, I've calculated the average human life expectancy to be 35 years!
It really makes sense! People really start falling apart in their 30's w/out medical intervention. Think about it - the risk of just about everything increases when you are in your 30's.
My heartrate has been about 30% faster than average people throughout my life, mostly due to medications. I should start falling apart 30 percent faster. I feel like I've suddenly aged a lot since I was 26 yrs old (my complains are about the same as people in their mid-30's). Doing the math, my "real" age is 36 yrs old. My life expectancy should be about 59. Maybe a little higher since my heart rate is now less than 80 bpm resting.
Interesting, and yet depressing at the same time. I should take care and treat myself like a 36 yr old by eating the proper vitamins, doing the proper getting ready for old age exercizes, and physicals.

05:38 pm - botulism tainted canned foods Tens of millions of cans of chili, chili sauce, beef stew, corned beef and dog food are being recalled nationwide because of possible contamination with the deadly botulinum toxin, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday.
The recalled cans cover more than 90 brands and every "best by" date on the market. Four cases of botulism, two in Texas and two in Indiana, have been traced to the contaminated foods. The four patients were all hospitalized but are recovering, says Michael Lynch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Botulism can cause paralysis. Symptoms, including blurred vision and slurred speech, can occur 18 to 36 hours after eating tainted food.
